It is one of the clearest indications of the difference in people who provide nutrition advice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); letter-spacing: 0.2px; text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\"><b>There are two groups of people providing advice<\/b>:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); letter-spacing: 0.2px; text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">1. Those who use <em>the highest level of evidence<\/em> available to provide nutrition recommendations\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); letter-spacing: 0.2px; text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">2. Those who do not know how to read scientific research, selectively cite, and cherry-pick poor quality studies to fit with their nutrition &#8220;ideas&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); letter-spacing: 0.2px; text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">Might sound harsh, but someone had to say it. And I highly suggest &#8211; more than anything &#8211; please make sure you are getting your nutrition advice from people in the first group. (I&#8217;ll also admit that not all dietitians and healthcare providers are in there! They will tell you that they&#8217;re toxic, cause inflammation and need to be <i>avoided<\/i>.\u00a0<\/p><p>The fear-mongering of seed oils started with the trends of &#8220;clean eating&#8221;, the Paleolithic movement and conspiracy theories (from people who don&#8217;t know the difference between case studies and randomized control trials).\u00a0 If you want to know more about the grading of research and the levels of evidence, <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.stonybrook.edu\/evidence-based-medicine\/levels_of_evidence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a>.<\/p><p>What I hear wellness folks on TikTok say is that seed oils are too high in omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA&#8217;s) &#8211; especially linoleic acid &#8211; and that their consumption can cause inflammation in the body.\u00a0<\/p><p>They reason that linoleic acid turns into arachidonic acid in the body, which is a building block for compounds that cause inflammation.\u00a0<\/p><p>However, a high intake of linoleic acid <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21663641\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">does not<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21663641\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> increase tissue levels of arachidonic acid.<\/a><\/p><p>What the wellness Tokkers are missing is that arachidonic acid is also a building block for compounds that fight inflammation. Plus, there is no research to show that seed oils or linoleic acid cause inflammation in humans.\u00a0 The studies they selectively cite were done on rodents, but humans and mice don&#8217;t respond the same way to linoleic acid. Human research has found that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19171857\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linoleic acid isn&#8217;t inflammatory<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b7dfcbf elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"b7dfcbf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-edebcf6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"edebcf6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The nutrition of seed oils<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-512a947 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"512a947\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>All oils are a mix of <b>saturated<\/b>, <b>monounsaturated<\/b> (MUFAs), and <b>polyunsaturated<\/b> fatty acids (PUFAs).\u00a0<\/p><p>For example, canola oil is about 7% saturated fat, 63% monounsaturated fat, and 30% polyunsaturated fat.\u00a0<\/p><p>Unsaturated (&#8220;healthy&#8221;) fats include:\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>monounsaturated fats &#8211; found in olives, avocados, canola oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, nuts and seeds<\/li><li>polyunsaturated fats &#8211; found in tofu, soybeans, corn oil, salmon, walnuts, flaxseeds, sunflower oil and seeds<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><p>It is widely accepted among both groups 1 and 2 (people who use science and people who don&#8217;t know how to use science) that omega-3 polyunsaturated fats are healthy for us, however, omega-6 polyunsaturated fats have been up for debate &#8211; until you read this post \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-749435e e-flex e-con-boxed wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no seed oils<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-747f9b7a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"747f9b7a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Just in case the lack of evidence supporting their BS claims isn&#8217;t enough to convince you, let&#8217;s look at the evidence on seed oils and omega-6 polyunsaturated fats.<\/p><p>A 2017 review and meta-analysis of 30 randomized controlled trials involving 1377 people found <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28752873\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no connection between a diet high in linoleic acid and markers of inflammation<\/a>.<\/p><p>A 2019 review of 30 observational studies from 13 countries involving 68,659 people found that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30971107\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high levels of linoleic acid were associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular events.<\/a><\/p><p>A 2020 systematic review of prospective cohort studies found that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7326588\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher intake of linoleic acid was associated with a modestly lower risk of mortality (death) from all causes, including cardiovascular disease and cancer<\/a>, supporting the potential long-term benefits of PUFA consumption.<\/p><p>These studies are examples of the quality of research that all people should trust (not just healthcare professionals).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8e2d265 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"8e2d265\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6b81efe1 elementor-widget class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-490cb94 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"490cb94\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">My opinion<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-25c21fa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"25c21fa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.2px;\">There is honestly NO debate. The majority of the population does not need to avoid seed oils. In fact, research shows the complete opposite &#8211; we should consume them in moderation in a well-balanced diet. I encourage my clients to include healthy, unsaturated fats daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.2px;\">The four enemies of liquid oils are heat, oxygen, light and time. So store your oils in opaque bottles in a cool, dark cabinet or in the refrigerator (if recommended on the label), and screw caps back on tightly. If an oil smells or tastes rancid or &#8220;off&#8221;, the best advice is to toss it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.2px;\">Diet culture&#8217;s fear-mongering of seed oils is unfounded, unnecessary, and harmful.
